“How a letter of support from former MP Simon O’Connor was republished, mistranslated, and politicised on WeChat ahead of a New Zealand court hearing.”

On the morning of Thursday, July 31, I happened to hear a podcast by former National MP Simon O’Connor. In it, he discussed the Auckland judge’s dismissal of Morgan Xiao’s lawsuit against Stuff journalist Justin Wong and praised the judge’s decision.

Simon is no stranger to my own case. On September 30, 2024, he wrote a letter to the Auckland District Court in support of me in a lawsuit brought by Morgan Xiao under the Harmful Digital Communications Act.

But on November 12, 2024, well before the hearing, Xiao posted an article on WeChat titled:
“Former Anti-China NZ MP Pleads on Behalf of Portia Mao in Court.”

In that article, Xiao published Simon’s photo and defamed him as “anti-China.”

Xiao wrote: “According to various sources, Simon O’Connor, during his tenure, was a member of an international alliance of anti-China MPs and was very active on the anti-China front.” ( Xiao was referring to the International Parliamentary Alliance on China.)

In his article, Xiao also publicly revealed the names and photos of four other Chinese supporters who had written letters to the court in support of me. The disclosure of court documents occurred before the court hearing without the court’s permission.

Furthermore, Xiao translated Simon’s whole letter into Chinese and posted it on WeChat, portraying me as being backed by a former “anti-China” politician to intimidate members of the Chinese community who support me.
